Ghost Stories and Other Fables

There have been numerous reports over the years regarding a particular intersection on Laurel Canyon at Lookout Mountain Drive. This is a canyon road transiting from Hollywood, CA and the San Fernando Valley. Near this intersection is where the House is located, as well as the burned ruins of was once a log cabin that hosted Frank Zappa, Janis Joplin, The Doors, and according to others, Harry Houdini!

According to varying reports.......

THE GHOST CARRIAGE:
.... on several occasions, it is said that at almost the exact stroke of midnight, people have witnessed an old carriage pulled by white horses dart out onto the canyon road from Lookout Mountain as though at full gallop. The carriage quickly disappears into the same nothingness from whence it came, and yet leaves behind nothing to prove its existence....except for a few car accidents!

ANOTHER GHOST RIDER!:
The groundskeeper recently described a ghostly rider on horseback coming from behind the waterfall at the bridge. The rider is said to have been visible for several minutes before floating over the terrain and fading away.

THANKS TO THE WILLIAM S. HART MUSEUM FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS TO THIS PAGE.

This is the layout of the land, covering approx. 3.5 acres. Over a mile of rock-lined paths guide you around the property, including visits to two known caves and five known waterfalls! (There could be more!)

The areas marked as (9) and (10), to the right of the map, are flatter areas of land, while the area marked as (14), near the center, is more of a hill.

The property is still a tourist attraction, and was visited recently by a group from the WIlliam S. Hart Museum. Sheila Miller was kind enough to send us the following:

September 28, 2000 via email

"The field trip was great! We had 16 people show and everyone liked the place. We all came away with million questions as I am sure you have also. I think the place has all kinds of possibilities......From what it looks like, there were a lot of wild and crazy things going down at your abode. It might very well make an interesting news or magazine article.....I can't thank you enough for your kindness. Dan (Crosby) went out of his way to show us around and I know he did a lot of work getting things ready before we got there....We took lot's of photos....It was a full day but we had a great time and I will be making reports to both the museum and the Board of Directors. You will be getting a formal thank you but at least for now you know you were responsible for a very successful field trip for the Volunteer's and Friends of Hart Park. Again Thank You...."

Notes on History &
the Grounds

THE HOUSE FOR SALE:
The House was built in the center of Hollywood's famed Laurel Canyon in the early 1920's by internationally renowned architect, Robert Byrd. It was originally known as "The Bird House".

The House is rumored to have been used by Harry Houdini for secret rendezvous and is connected by a secret tunnel that connects to the Houdini house located directly across Laurel Canyon.

The Tree House / Bird House is nestled high on the Estate's spacious grounds. Built around two massive trees, upon an adjoining spring-fed rock-lined pond, the house's unique multi-level construction must be experienced to be fully appreciated.

The Wine Cellar / Dungeon is world renowned as the scene of many "interesting" celebrity gatherings. The serene, rambling grounds feature a koi-filled natural pond, waterfalls, pools, wells, bridges, numerous giant redwoods and endless paths which lead to small meditation areas, hidden caves and other hidden paths! The peaceful environment allows a visitor to reflect and experience the luxury and tranquility of a one-of-a-kind Estate from Hollywood's illustrious past.

The House retains all the ambiance and spirit of the region's early glory days. Rock history, notorious early-Hollywood stories, and boundless entertainment folk-lore roam the grounds.

THE LOWER LOT: CABIN HOME OF HOLLYWOOD ELITE
Cowboy Movie star Tom Mix purchased the now-burned-down 3-story log cabin with a bowling alley in the basement in the 1920's. It instantly became a centerpiece of Laurel Canyon society and history, as well as the site of countless myths and legends.

The cabin reached another level of notoriety in the 60's when it was inhabited by rock legend Frank Zappa. It was recognized as the center of Hollywood psychedelia and L.A.'s crazed Rock scene, being home to John Mayall of the Blues Breakers, the famed GTO's ("Girls Together Outrageously") as well as the notorious "Plaster Casters." A constant stream of Rock's elite, including Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Love, Janis Joplin, James Taylor, Mick Jagger, Mary-Ann Faithful, Jeff Beck, and others visited the house and property in a seemingly non-stop parade. Eric Burdon, lead singer of the Animals, rented the house after Zappa and his communal family moved out.

A Rolling Stone Article of February 15, 1969 talks about the GTOs finding their way to "Tom Mix's old house in Laurel Canyon. At that time, Carl Orestes Franzoni [a Frank Zappa "family" member]....was living there in one of LAs wilder communes." The article continues to say that "the house rent[ed] for $700 a month and later Zappa moved in, gathering his own commune to supplant that of Franzoni's......they [the GTOs] lived together in the vault of the basement of the house (right next to the bowling alley)."

The article continues to discuss Miss Christine's tenure as housekeeper and governess for the Zappa family. Frank Zappa is the mastermind behind the GTO name, even having called the girls the "Laurel Canyon Ballet Company."

Ironically, it was in the midst of this renowned hedonistic revelry that next-door neighbor Joni Mitchell, absorbed in the tranquillity of the setting, penned the famed "Ladies Of The Canyon" album as well as inspiring Canyon guests such as Crosby, Stills & Nash to write similar songs like "Our House."

It was also during this period that frequent cabin-guest Jimi Hendrix briefly resided in the Errol Flynn mansion to the north of the property. The mansion was once a home for "wayward women" and was also occupied in earlier years by notables ranging from Bugsy Siegel to W.C. Fields. The mansion is currently owned by Rick Rubin, co-founder of Def Jam Records (now American) and producer for The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nine Inch Nails, The Black Crowes, Mick Jagger and numerous others. The canyon tradition continues...

The remaining house and surrounding property rank among the most historically interesting in the area. To this day it is said that you can still hear the laughter and feel the presence of the incredible personalities that have lived and visited there.
